Family Home in the Forest: Vertical Larch Boards in "Dark Black"

About the project

Set within a pine forest, this family home is shaped as a restrained, compact form that responds directly to its surroundings. A steep metal roof and continuous vertical façade establish crisp geometry, while the deep black larch boards let the building settle into the shadowed tree line. The “Dark Black” finish was chosen to keep the exterior calm and understated, heightening the contrast with the warm interior revealed through large sliding glass doors that open daily life onto a generous timber terrace.

From a performance standpoint, the façade uses Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi) – a controlled burning method that forms a protective carbon layer on the wood surface. On larch, this treatment improves moisture resistance, limits biological activity, and reduces maintenance needs over time. In a forest environment with fluctuating humidity and seasonal exposure, the charred surface also helps discourage insect activity, supporting long-term stability and durability.

"Dark Black" Larch

The “Dark Black” finish was selected for its consistent tone and visual depth, reinforcing the vertical rhythm of the façade without overpowering the landscape. On larch, controlled charring delivers a balanced mix of architectural character and practical resilience – a reliable choice for residential projects in wooded settings.
