House Above the City: "Dark Black" Larch Cladding Boards
About the project
Location: Slovenia

Architects: STRIP LAB – Strategies for Sustainable Space – architecture
The house stands on a grassy slope, with its low volumes following the terrain and sheltered by wide roof overhangs. Large glazed sections reflect the surrounding trees and visually lighten the mass. The dark cladding draws a sharp outline against the landscape, while the vertical boards give the façades rhythm and order.
Set in an open location, the exterior is constantly exposed to sun, wind, and rain throughout the year. Shou Sugi Ban is a controlled charring process that creates a carbon layer on the wood surface. In this context, it helps slow UV-driven colour change and ensures a more even ageing across large surfaces. The result is a calm, dark façade that remains consistent as the seasons shift and requires less ongoing maintenance.
Boards Used in the Project
"Dark Black" Larch
“Dark Black” larch makes the building’s lines read sharper: corners feel cleaner, and the shadow lines under the roof overhangs become more defined, letting the glass stay the main light element. It also suits a hillside façade with high exposure, where a charred surface can help the boards hold a steadier appearance over time than untreated exterior wood.
