Velo Bar: Vertical larch cladding boards in "Deep Char"

About the project

Location: Kačerginė, Lithuania

Photography: Rūta Melvin

Set among tall pines, Velo Bar reads as a compact pavilion at the forest edge – crisp glazing, dark geometry, and doors that open straight onto the terrace. Vertical “Deep Char” larch boards carry the identity from the façade into the interior, so the same shadowed grain that defines the exterior continues behind the bar, adding depth as the light shifts through the trees.

Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi) is a controlled charring method that forms a protective carbon layer on the wood surface. In a commercial, family-run setting exposed to weather and daily use, “Deep Char” larch boards provide a robust finish with strong resistance to moisture and UV, helping the building hold its character through the seasons with lower maintenance demands.

The selection does two jobs at once: visually, the pronounced texture sharpens the minimal lines and strengthens contrast against glass; practically, the charred surface suits hospitality interiors and exteriors where a stable, character-rich lining must endure frequent contact without looking tired.
